Asea was commissioned in 2008 by the Belvedere Singers, a community choir based in the Dorset coastal town of Swanage. Ian York's text, specifically written for the project, describes a summer's day along the south coast of England with parents reliving their childhood through their own children. Short scenes are described from fishermen waiting for the tide to turn, through to the evening stroll along the shore. The work concludes with the night stars mixing with the promenade lights in reflections across the sea.
