City of the Heart takes its title from one of the poet's books.  The poet, deaf/blind since the age of 4, has captured in words his ability to perceive colours and sounds from deep within his world of darkness.  Although in 3/4, the meter is illusional, with a 6/8 undercurrent.  There are tight, lush harmonies built from a simple melody that come together, piece by piece or all at once, keeping it exciting with nuance and texture until the very end.  Highly syncopated, a high school or community chorus will find this work fun and enjoyable to sing, and will certainly relate to its interesting text.  This work received second place in the 26th annual Ithaca College School of Music Choral Composition Competition, 2005.
