This song was inspired by a friend of the composer's who is fighting cystic fibrosis. Her positive spirit and determination in lieu of physical hardships spoke to him. He found the metaphor of the candle to be quite appropriate: a flame can provide warmth and light, it has unlimited potential for growth and changing what and how we see, but it is also so vulnerable to such a simple thing as a slight breeze. The composer's intent is to capture the flame's potential in this SSA setting.
