Maria, originally a guitar composition by Francisco Tarrega (1852 - 1909), has been beautifully arranged for strings. The piece is Slavic in nature, Tarrega composed many dances in this idiom, and is "polka-like" with a cut-time feel. Written in a minor, the penultimate measure in Maria is a B flat arpeggio, creating a Phrygian mode feel to the dance.
