composer: Rick Bartlett
SATB divisi, piano or organ
Pie Jesu, scored for SATB divisi and piano or organ, was the 2006 First Place Winner in the Northwest Missouri State University Choral Composition Competition. It is dedicated to Dr. Stephen Town and the Tower Choir of NWMSU. This work is fairly steady and sweet throughout, tempered with control and tenderness even in the higher dynamics, and should not be rushed. Further, the score is extended with clusters of lushness and a soaring a cappella middle section with a molto ritard in the last several measures of the work. The text is only a portion of the Pie Jesu and focuses on the prayer of granting eternal rest. The work should move fluidly and avoid any rhythmic accent.
